I will be conducting my service learning at Rock Canyon Elementary School, located in Provo, Utah. This is the school I attended for grades K-6. I have always loved this school and will learn to love it more as I get to know the faculty and students there.

The most exciting thing about my school is that it is brand new. This is the first year of instruction in the new building. The old school was torn down over the past summer, and students returned to a new school for the 2016-2017 school year. It makes things a little more difficult for me, since I no longer know where any of the classrooms are or where the kids go for pull-outs, and I get lost sometimes. The students come from mostly middle to upper-middle class families. There is not much diversity as far as race is concerned. The students are primarily Caucasian with a few minorities here and there. A large majority of the student body is reading on grade level and passed their end-of-year tests in May of 2016. They have a small after-school program but only a handful of students attend on a regular basis. 32% of the kids are in the free or reduced lunch program. The school has an ESL program, as well as speech therapy and other academic assistance programs for struggling students.

To me, service learning is the best kind of learning. It is a chance to get out into the community and make it better. It is hands on learning experience benefiting the student and the agency in which they are performing their twenty service learning hours. Service learning is all about real world experience, which gives students more of an opportunity to grow than the confines of a classroom ever could.

I am so excited for my service learning experience to begin. I can't wait to interact with the students at Rock Canyon Elementary school and learn just as much from them as I hope they learn from
