In the Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe, the narrator arrives at the House of Usher, a very creepy crawly mansion owned by his childhood friend, Roderick Usher. Roderick is suffering from a strange and mysterious illness as a result of Roderick’s tendency to isolate himself from society. As a result, Roderick’s mental state has deteriorated, interfering with his perception of the world around him, limiting his ability to think rationally and ultimately leads to the murder of his sister Madeleine. Roderick is a great example of the toll extreme isolation and social deprivation takes on an individual's well being.
