The Holocaust was a period in time during 1941 and 1945 where Nazi Germany murdered about 6 million Jews, which was about 2 thirds of Europe's Jewish population. The book “Maus” written by Art Spiegelman, is a graphic novel about a Jew, Vladek’s story during the Holocaust. Vladek and his son Artie are the main characters in this biography. The poem “The Action in the Ghetto of Rohatyn” written by Alexander Kimel, a Holocaust survivor, describes the pain and struggle people had to experience during the Holocaust. Throughout “Maus” and the poem “The Action in the Ghetto of Rohatyn” there are many similarities and differences between the structure and theme.

This is a form of writing a book that can allow readers to have a better understanding of the main message, especially with this big of a topic. By there being a numerous amount of drawings in the novel, readers get a visual representation which is most likely to increase our interest in the book, which makes this structure very important. In the poem “The Action in the Ghetto of Rohatyn” the structure used is a poem. In a poem, every word, comma, stanza, line, etc. is important to the community. A poem isn't as long as a book, but in a smaller amount of words, a big message is able to reach readers. This poem uses strong, powerful, more formal language that can reach a different audience, but still express the same topic. In comparison to the graphic novel “Maus”, the poem does not use fictional characters, or drawings, but describes the feelings and experiences of mothers and children during the Holocaust with figurative language, and words that play a big part in how we interpret the message
