Loneliness makes up how we as human’s act, and effects are personalities. John Steinbeck is able to thoroughly show this throughout his novella “Of Mice And Men”. Curley's Wife is dominated by loneliness everything that she does and the way she acts is all because of her reacting to being alone. Candy is changed in the middle of the story when his one true friend, his dog is put down. Every bit of Crook’s life he has been alone which has shaped how we acts and feels towards other people. In this novella almost all the main characters are affected by being alone, some more than others. Overall John Steinbeck is able to show how people are affected by loneliness. He does this by having the setting on a ranch during the great depression when no one can rely on each other so they have to fend for themselves. This is shown greatly through Curly’s Wife.
Curly’s wife has always been alone even when she is around other people. When she feels alone she makes excuses to see and talk to other people. She is always going around asking where Curly is trying to not feel alone. She is always ‘“lookin’ for Curley, or… lef’ something’ layin’ around’” (Steinbeck 51). If it was not for loneliness Curly’s wife would not have married Curly; she might have put herself into a relationship that she enjoyed. Candy unlike some of the characters were able to experience not being alone. When he lost his dog loneliness shaped his life instantaneously.
