Who Owns the title “Most Courageous?” Just because the Oak and Walnut are bigger, it doesn't mean their courage runs deeper than the small fig. In the journey the novel, Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor, took, the fictional character Stacey was forced to be courageous in the cruel world he lived in. He showed his courage when he was able to tell his best friend, T.J, no, when he tore up T,J’s cheat notes so T.J wouldn't get in trouble, and when he was forced to hold the mule, Jack, in the chaos caused by the ambush from the white men. Stacey, a young black boy, had to live in a world where race was the only thing to determine one's life, how they were treated, and how everyone saw them. T.J’s cheat notes, gone. Stacey was a protective friend, and did whatever he needed to keep his friends out of trouble. When T.J. had decided to make some cheat notes for a upcoming test, Stacey ripped them up, trying to keep T,J out of trouble. Down the pieces went, the mud of the gully swallowing them up. This is proved on page 79, chap 4, when the author wrote “But Stacey turned his back and tore the paper into bits, depositing them in the gully”.
