The central theme of racism is demonstrated throughout as numerous characters challenge others’ beliefs. Being racist is not only thinking that one race is superior than another, but is also when someone shows an unfair feeling of dislike, or prejudices towards a person because of their race. In the novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, the main character, Cassie Logan, has strong confidence and beliefs in her race, culture, and history. In 1933, discrimination and racism was unfortunately none other than the norm. Mr. Simms and his daughter, Lillian Jean are two characters that certainly try to tear Cassie down. After an accidental offense turns into a dispute between Lillian and Cassie, Lillian blames her for an action that were the both of their faults. “You can’t watch where you going, get in the road. Maybe that way you won't be bumping into decent white folks with your little nasty self”(Taylor 114). This quote clearly portrays Lillian's character and how discriminatory she can be; completely opposite of the personality of her brother, Jeremy, who did not discriminate in this situation, but treated it none the less than a white-to-white encounter (as if Cassie were white).
