Shakespeare intertwines several literary devices making his work, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet almost impossible to overlook. Blank Verse is a type of poetry that is very seldomly used in literature due to its incredible difficulty. Dramatic Irony is used frequently to contradict the characters thoughts to the actual truth. Soliloquies are also used throughout the play to expresses deep thoughts and feelings about certain things or people. Using blank verse, dramatic irony, and soliloquies Shakespeare shapes the storyline and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat throughout the whole play!
One example of a way that Shakespeare makes his work more intriguing is by using blank verse. This section of blank verse gives us a sense of the unrhymed poetry ;”Two households, both alike in dignity,/In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,/From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,/Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean” (A. I, Prologue, L. 1-4).This introduces the idea of how difficult iambic pentameter is, for Shakespeare to write the whole play in this and still put an amazing sense of tragedy and suspense is unbelieveable. Blank verse makes “Romeo and Juliet” so compelling, another literary device that gives the story character is dramatic irony.

Blank verse gives the story a great poetry scheme and adds to the interest of the story. Along with that, dramatic irony makes the readers love every minute of tension that is encountered. Finally, soliloquies give the tragedy such diversity and make the characters feelings so relevant, urging the audience sympathize with them. Using these three devices and creating the magnificent work of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare gives people a reason to remember and honor him as a playwright to this
