Some people believe in fate, while some believe it is complete nonsense. Fate is a power beyond one’s control that is believed to decide what happens. Many people may believe that fate does have a significant effect on their lives. They believe their whole life is already predetermined, and everything is laid out like a road map. In reality, it does not have any effect. The decisions that people make are what control their lives. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the main characters both mention fate several times during the play. They believe that all their misfortunes are a result of their terrible fate. On the way to the Capulet party, Romeo revealed that he had a dream about the party and has second thoughts about attending. He proclaims, “With this night’s revels, and expire of the term of a despised life closed in my breast by some vile forfeit of untimely death. But he that hath the steerage of my course direct my sail. On lusty gentlemen”(49). Romeo said that he dreamed he would have an untimely death after going to the Capulet party. This turns out to be true. Even with fate warning him, Romeo decided to ignore it and went to the party. As a result, Romeo met Juliet and fell in love, and he angered Tybalt. This caused a fight between Tybalt and him, and the lives of Romeo and Juliet ending tragically soon after. All of this could have been prevented if not for Romeo’s decision to go to the Capulet party. Even though fate played a role, Romeo’s decision was what ultimately lead to his death. On her balcony, Juliet is professing her love to Romeo. She announces, “If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow”(79). Juliet is telling Romeo that if he truly loves her and wants to marry, to tell her tomorrow. Knowing that Romeo is a Montague, Juliet was completely ready to marry him and does not think about the repercussions. She was completely oblivious to what her and Romeo’s family would think of them marrying their mortal enemy. Given the fact that she is marrying a man she met the same day, truly shows her immaturity. Both Juliet and Romeo do not have much experience with love and base their love towards each other mainly on looks. As a result, their entire relationship caused many complications, and their lives to go completely downhill. If she hadn’t decided to marry Romeo, she could have avoided all the possible consequences. Besides this, Juliet has made some other questionable choices. As Juliet was about to drink the potion the Friar gave her, fear started to take over her mind. She wondered if the potion will work at all, if its poison, if she’ll wake up before Romeo arrives, if she will suffocate, or if she will go crazy in the tomb. Ultimately, she decided to take the potion. Even though she knew the possible consequences, Juliet decided to take the potion and risk her life.
