Dear Editor,

One of the most central experiences of life, we know, is raising children. In particular the bond between father and son can bring an overwhelming amount of pride and joy. I have recently had the time to sit down and read Raimond Gaita’s, Romulus, My Father. Gaita’s depiction in his memoir of his childhood, and relationship with his father, has profoundly inspired myself and many others. Even through both the good and bad times, built on trust and mutual respect, Gaita and his father maintained a close bond. Gaitas memoir is a swansong, reading this the reader will gain acceptance and an insight of the lives living in an environment of deep myopic mistrust. For a much loved father, ordinary, struggling immigrants in a harsh reality.

Gaita’s experiences of such things helps to strengthen his heart-wrenching story of a fractured childhood. The text explores the progress of the Gaita family through their new life in Australia and the adversity they faced. The Gaitas moved to a farmhouse named Frogmore in rural Victoria where they lived for the next 10 years. This is where Raimond spent most of his childhood. Gaitas mother’s increasingly delicate mental health after moving, as well as her affair with Mitru, Romulus’ friend, placed a significant burden on both Raimond and his father. Romulus was forced to cope with his wife’s neglect of Raimond, but throughout out all the tragic events that had occurred, Romulus remained steady. He gave Raimond the strength to accept their circumstances through honesty and compassion. Romulus was a man of integrity, and an incredible father in Gaita’s
