How did FDR approach the economic condition of the United States when he took office in 1933? When Franklin Roosevelt took office, he created a series of programs in response to the Great Depression and had three main focuses. The first one being relief for the unemployed and poor; recovery of the economy; and reforming a divested financial system. Franklin’s programs which were called “The New Deal” also created a political realignment where the Democratic Party became the majority and its theology was heavily saturated with liberal ideas. During this stall, there was an increase in the unemployment rate and manufacturing production fell drastically. In response to these issues, FDR approached Congress for approximately $3.75 billion which was to be split among various agencies. This spending set the economy in motion and recovery once again began. President Roosevelt was urged by many to create a balance budget, in response, he made large cuts to government spending. Eventually, the nation returned to deficit spending. In doings so, the unemployment rate fell to practically no unemployment by1945.
