Grapes of Wrath Final Essay In all the best novels of literature we see the main characters change and evolve throughout the story. In the novel, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Rose of Sharon changes from being a very selfish to a gracious person. She faces many problems such as traveling across the country with her family, while pregnant and living of very little. In the beginning of the trip she is a very self centered person. She only thinks of how her and Connie, her husband, are going to live in California. She shows her graciousness by baring her breast to a random, starving stranger in the barn. “Then she hoisted her tired body up and drew the comfort about her. … Rose of Sharon loosened one side of the blanket and bared her breast. ‘You got to,’ she said. She squirmed closer and pulled his head close. ‘There!’ she said. ‘There.’ Her hand moved behind his head and supported it.” (pg. 455) This is proving her to be a much more giving person because she is giving her milk when she has so little. She has just lost her baby and her body is very fragile and weak, but yet she is still trying to help him. She also doesn't know this man at all and has no ties to him at all. She is willing to give and help to people she dosen’t know out of the goodness of her heart. Rose of Sharon ends being a very giving person who has come a long way from being such a selfish person. Throughout the novel, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Rose of Sharon's changes from being a very selfish to a gracious person. In the beginning of the novel she is a very selfish person who only focused on how her and Connie survive, but after losing her baby she has a change of heart. She ends up becoming a much more gracious person who is willing to put other people before herself. In the end if you only think about yourself you will never succeed, but if you think about the “we” then everyone
