A Look at US Foreign Policy: Roy v. Krauthammer
In his farewell address given to the citizens of the United States in 1796 as he was leaving office, George Washington focused on the preservation of the Union and to avoid sectionalism, which he saw as the potential destroyer of the nation and common interest.
“The name of American, which belongs to you, in your national capacity must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discriminations” (Washington).

What Washington is saying is think not of yourself as a member of a certain political faction, but think of yourself as an American; this thought should always be the first in the minds of her citizens. It is remarkable that our nation’s first president would correctly predict that political parties would end up being one of the major factors contributing to the downfall of this nation. In modern times, this notion is especially true. The multiple sides of the political die are constantly being thrown back and forth in a seemingly endless grab for power. This is not what the Founding Fathers envisioned; but it has ended up being the reality of our political system. The focus of this paper will be to contrast the liberal and conservative views on foreign policy generally held by the Democrat and Republican Parties, respectively. …show more content…
