Our self identities, define who we are as individuals and defines every other individual on planet earth in their own unique way. It encompasses our totality of knowledge and understanding through our life experiences as we develop our personalities, capabilities, aptitudes, intellect, interests, relationships, and physical characteristics. Our self concept is established from the beliefs that an individual holds about themselves and the response of others. It is influenced by the interactions that people have with other people that are important in their lives. Technology has expanded our social world dramatically in the last decade, from family, friends, communities, education, to an almost limitless universe of people primarily due to the internet and social media. These social influences, that are accelerated due to the recent explosion of technology, are shaping our self identities in way in which most of us aren't even the least bit aware. The most powerful way in which technology is altering our self identity is through the shift of being internally to externally driven. Social factors have always impacted the formation of our self identity. Nor does it provide feedback on our character about how grounded our self identities are in the reality of our lives. Instead, popular culture manifest us on how we should be. The problem here is that self identity that is shaped by popular culture serves its own self interest rather then the interest of the person. Not to mention, self identity is no longer self identity, but rather it is an identity projected unto popular culture, which is in no way an accurate reflection of who we really are as an
