My legs burned as if I was running from a fire I couldn’t get away from. Adrenaline had been pumping in my body since the early morning and it finally led up to this. Sweat was dripping into my strained eyes and stung as I pushed on. Every inch of my body was telling me to stop, but I could not because I did not have a choice, I had to beat the guy next to me. The irony of all of it, was the fact that I hated running and I often thought to myself why the hell am I doing this? Most of my high school experience, I looked at runners and found it amusing with the small shorts they had to wear and I constantly made fun of them for it. In a recent study, scientists have discovered that running has profound improvements on our brain. In David Disalvo’s article titled “Why Running is Incredible Medicine For Your Brain,” he talks about how running has the “ability to spark neurogenesis: the growth of new brain cells.”(Disalvo par. 2) This means that running helps develop and maintain our brains composition. It is known to have stronger effects than some forms of antidepressants, like Prozac when researched, it is said that running “indicates that it does the same thing, but on an even larger scale”(Par. 3) Aside from your brain, it is also known for promoting cardiovascular health. According to the “Journal of the American College of Cardiology” concluded that “compared with non-runners, runners had 30% and 45% lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality” (Par. 15). Running has proven to cause great increases in human physical health and is a big motivation for us to run, knowing that it will increase our chances of living a longer and healthier lifestyle. For the few, running has been more than just a motivation but rather a lifestyle that they live by.
