Russell Earl Marker became a famous figure in the science world in the 1930s. Marker

was the co-founder of a multi-billion dollar business, the Syntex Corporation. The Syntex

Corporation was a pharmaceutical company that was formed in 1944 in Mexico. The idea of this

company was to make therapeutic steroids from specific Mexican yams. Marker did other things

as well, including his studies of steroidal hormones. Marker impacted the science world in a

numerous ways helping our world today.

Marker was born in 1902 on March 12 where he grew up in Maryland. In 1926 Marker

married his wife, Mildred Collins. His wife then inspired and supported him to work as an

Only a short year later, in 1944,

Syntex Corporation was made to start the production of Progesterone. May of 1945, a dispute

broke out in the company leading to Marker leaving the company. This caused him to start a new

company, doing the same type of production, but named it Botanica-mex in a place near Mexico

City. This company then began to make several kilos of progesterone. In 1946, Botanica-mex

crashed and was turned into another new company now called Hormonosynth. During this time,

the plant was replaced by a different yam. This new yam was called barbasco and also contained

up to five hundred percent more diosgenin. Marker later retired and the company was taken over

and renamed Diosynth. Through all the changes of the company’s Marker never lost his fame.

Marker had a numerous amount of person goals and perseverance that led him to all his

accomplishments. He learned to be single minded and do his best in everything he did. Marker

did many different studies and a lot of research to help him discover the progesterone. Marker
