Growing up as a kid in Australia, my parents used to always tell me to be proud of who I am, and if were asked what religion I followed, say Islam. My family has so much pride in our religion as they see it as a religion of peace. But over the course of the past several years, the world has watched the terrorist group, IS, who are trying to establish a caliphate, barbarically kill innocent people all around the world including Australians with haunting images, news reports, and video footage which leave us all shaken. Due to their actions, Islam should not be reformed in Australia just because a minority of radicals misinterpret views of actual Islam.

In Lesley Russel’s opinion piece published in The Age Newspaper (December 25, 2015), she argues that “any politics that targets people because of race or religion must be rejected.” Russel is trying to get its readers to understand that if religion appears in politics with negative influential power, the world is going to be listening to what they hear and target their hatred towards the religion as a whole. Pope Francis said, “To imitate the hatred and violence of tyrants and murderers is the best way to take their place.”

Many may see that Islam is a violent religion which needs to be reshaped due to the way it’s portrayed by IS, though these people fail to understand that these extremists do not accurately portray the religion in any sort of way, in fact, it states in the Quran that “if anyone killed a person, it would be as if they killed the whole of mankind.”? If our holy book speaks peaceful sayings like that, doesn’t it seem like a religion which already likely sounds good, not a religion which needs to be reformed because IS “change their understanding of the holy
