Many photographers, including Sabino Osuna, recorded the strenuous events that took place during the Mexican Revolution in the fight between several revolutionary groups such as those led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata against the regimes of Huerta, Diaz and Madero. During ‘La Decena Trágica’ (Ten Tragic Days), Madero was assassinated, Huerta seized power with the help from the US Government and it became compulsory to join the army under Huerta, which had grave effects on the country, In 1914, when Osuna’s ‘Soldados’ was captured, Mexico was still suffering recovering from these matters. ‘Soldados’ is part of a collection of photographs taken during the revolution: ‘Mexico at the Hour of Combat’ which principally portray the earlier years of the revolution.
‘Soldados’ (soldiers), a black and white image, denotes a glum scene, with a somber group of people, varied in sex, age and class, many of whom are armed with an assortment of weapons ranging from machetes to rifles, and others holding musical instruments, with the majority wearing sombreros, as they stand under the Mexican flag on a cobbled street, surrounded by trees and what appear to be town houses. Personally I believe that they resemble a sign of unique culture, highlighting that Mexico is more than a war-fuelled country but rather a place that exists language, arts, social habits, religion and cuisine. The flag, above where everyone is stood, signifies unity where everyone is one country, one side, one body because they have a national identity and they are seeking a common target. It symbolises a sense of hope, purity and religion and very importantly, a sense of national pride. The flag is in the centre of the photograph, creating a myth of main focus, to become a country with bright future prospects and to escape a life where sole concentration is reliant on protecting family and
