Sacagawea was born in 1788 Lemhi County, Idaho. Her father was the chief of her village. Her Shoshone name was Boinaiv, meaning “Grass Maiden”. The fall of 1800, Boinaiv was captured by the Hidatsa War Party, giving her the name Sacagawea, and sold to Toussaint Charbonneau to be one of his wives. She’s best known as a Shoshone interpreter in the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory and fine new trade routes. The winter of 1804, Lewis and Clark, called the Corps of Discovery, entered the area. When they met Charbonneau, they immediately invited Sacagawea to accompany them in the journey as an interpreter, even though she was pregnant. Shortly after she gave birth, the expedition set forth.
