All artists have different opinions on the term ‘sacred ground' whether it be internal or external environments, or sacred sites or memories. “A sacred landscape is not simply a backdrop for action, but rather a place filled with names, associations, and memories that link together everything present there. Humans become linked to the rocks, trees, animals, rivers, mountains and these bonds guide future human interaction with that place.” This is Tilley.C, interpretation of the term ‘sacred ground.' John Olsen and Margaret Olley are two Australian artists who are famous for their paintings on their idea of sacred ground.

John Olsen is an 88 year old artist, who paints abstract, mixed media interpretations of the external environments of Australia within his memory. His artworks constantly bring up the themes of the sun, water, and his childhood memories; many of the paintings that are about his childhood memories consist of depressed moods because he was born at the time of the Great Depression.
