In the book Enrique’s Journey, author Sonia Nazario gives lots of empathy for her characters. The reason why she shows so much empathy might come from her special background and experiences. Both of her parents’ families immigrated from Syria and Poland to Argentina due to religious persecution and poverty. They got married and immigrated to America in 1960. Sonia Nazario was born in Kansas and as an immigrant child grew up in America, she understood how it feels like to live in a foreign country. Nazario also spent some of her childhood time in Argentina during the genocidal “dirty war,” where Argentine government against suspected dissidents and subversives.
