Sacrifice In John Steinbeck's The Five People You Meet In Heaven

Life is a constant battle of right or wrong, and when the line between the two become faded conflict can arise. From an insightful perspective the only difference between right and wrong is the lesson learned. These lessons can be received differently depending on the recipient, for example, Eddie from "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" disregard his life as a lesson excepts it as a burden. Eddie is damaged though, for he has been through many hardships and downfalls. He said the pass is very tragically and has to face five people in heaven that his life has affected. In heaven he learns that connection between people, forgiveness of loved ones and sacrifice have shaped him into the man he is, even if he did not know it before.

Sadly enough before his death, Eddie thought that sacrifice always had a negative connotation with no positive return. His whole life had revolved around a routing, a routine where his meals were the same, people were the same and life was the same. For him sacrifice started in the war when he was shot in the knee. It had affected his life indefinitely and caused him deep physical and mental pain. To his dismay he found out his Captain had shot him and brought him those retched chronic injuries. Albeit it was true, it was soon put behind him as he learned that the captain was worried he was gonna die from running into the fire. The Captain had also taken his own life (by accident) in place of all the others that survived. By these accounts Eddie’s life could be interpreted as a sacrifice for him to find peace in heaven.

Eddie’s Realization that his life had shaped him into a connected and forgiving man shocked him. All of the hardships he had gone through ended up making him better, making him complete. The answers that he kept looking for were infant of his eyes, maybe a bit clouded, but nothing more then ignorance separated them from him. Now Eddie’s slate has been wiped clean, and all harmful emotions gone, he is at peace. Dying has helped him live more, like a flower growing in the fresh dirt after a forest fire, he was reborn into the place of the
