Sacrifice In Nicaragua

Two parents who had worked vigorously for all they had, gave it all up for their kids. The sacrifice that Papa Adolfo and Mamita(my grandparents) made was the decision to leave their life of luxury and comfort, where maids and nannies helped the household and food was always on the table, to protect their children and generation to come. My grandmother was never hesitant to do what was good for her children, and my grandfather ran the family pharmacy with her and sometimes by himself when she decided to be with their kids. They made the difficult decision to leave Nicaragua and their comfortable life, to move to Florida with my grandmother’s sister. In most instances, when kids were taken they would be killed in battle, never to seen by their parents again. Papa Adolfo and Mamita, whose main priority was the safety of their kids, decided to not send their kids to school because Elise and Adolfo, the two oldest of the kids were at the age where some of their classmates began to be taken away. On December 18th, a rainy day like any other, Mamita surprised all four of her children with the announcement that they would be traveling to Florida to go to Disneyworld, an occasion that was not new but, not common. When they all arrived, Papa Adolfo announced that they would be staying in at their aunt’s house through Christmas, and eventually “through Christmas” turned to “forever” as my grandparents had planned that the whole time. Their idea was for one of them to stay in the U.S while the other stayed in Nicaragua taking care of the family business and to make sure it wasn’t stolen by the Sandinistas. Unfortunately, my grandparents were forced to stay in Nicaragua, as the U.S. embassy continuously denied them visas to visit their
