Peddie, found in 1864, is a private boarding school where outstanding students follow the core values, which are Respect, Honesty, Scholarship, Balance and Courage. These values are important in our daily lives because it helps to guide us living our lives. These values were also relevant even as far back as when civilization first arose, illustrated in the Epic of Gilgamesh. There are also numerous values that are conveyed in the Epic of Gilgamesh that are innate in the Peddie School, but courage is most important out of all. Because these principles are so crucial for Peddie students and faculties, the Epic of Gilgamesh is a perfect read that depicts these important values.

2121The purpose of them killing Humbaba is to glorify themselves and also prove to the people that they should not fear the monster. Throughout the journey to defeat Humbaba, Enkidu shows signs of nervousness because he has seen the great strength of Humbaba, the Guardian of the Cedar Forest. Gilgamesh is not even slightly fearful, as he says to Enkidu with conviction, “How is this, already you are afraid! I will go first although I am your lord, and you may safely call out… Then if I fall I leave behind me a name that endures.” (10) While Enkidu tells Gilgamesh that Humbaba is a powerful beast, Gilgamesh would always tell Enkidu to be brave and courageous as they will be remembered as great heroes. Gilgamesh is truly courageous because he is trying to convey the message that people should not be fearful of Humbaba by risking his life to defeat it.
