How should we remember the man who brought independence to Saint Domingue (Haiti)? Toussaint Louverture was a jacobin who led the slave rebellion in 1791. He was always fighting for the rights of slaves and for their liberty. He became commander-in-chief of Saint Domingue for life and fought with France for independence. He was captured by France and taken to a jail, where he died due to sickness and exhaustion. Toussaint never lived to see Haiti’s independence. Toussaint Louverture should be remembered in many ways, including him being a liberator of slaves, a ruler of Saint Domingue, and a military commander. Toussaint Louverture was a liberator of slaves and fought for their freedom and rights. Document A shows how the French Revolution inspired Saint Domingue to fight for their citizenship. At the time, Toussaint was a commander of a small detachment of slave soldiers. People liked his war tactics and what he stood for and made him ruler of Saint Domingue, where he then gained control of the Spanish side of the island. Document F states that Toussaint’s generosity, knowledge, courageousness, and humanity helped him gain his soldiers’ confidence and respect. Toussaint claimed that the French were coming to reinstate slavery. When the French landed, they found the city abandoned and left in ruins. Toussaint and his troops had fled to the mountains because in the citadels, “the blacks have always proved too much for the whites”. Emphasis as a military commander should be placed on Toussaint Louverture because even though he made bad decisions as commander, he made good ones as well.
