When you think of Saint Louis you think of the Arch, Busch Stadium, Magic House, and the Science Center. The Saint Louis Art Museum is always the first to be thrown under the rug and slip your mind when thinking of places to visit. Some people think of art as boring, or easy, I find it interesting and enjoyable to the eye. It is easy to think that the art museum could be boring to go to, but I had a very open mind about my experience. I have visited the art museum when I was little on a field trip, and never imagined I would go again on my own. I took this experience as more of a learning experience rather than a “have to do” for this class. When I first walked in, I was overwhelmed with the difference in every piece of art, and all the different …show more content…
This painting is called, The Sinking of the Titanic. Max Beckmann did this painting in 1912-13. When you think of the Titanic, you think of the lives lost and the amount of morn and emotion that went along with it. Beckman was inspired by the new accounts of this event, which then he used to create this painting that captured the emotion clearly. He made his focus on the lifeboats, by placing the distant, brightly lit linear against a red night sky. A dark red night sky makes my think of something bad is happening or is about to happen. The vibrant green and blue colors highlights the nightmarish and dark quality of the scene, as well as ghostly heads appearing in the water around the …show more content…

On the other hand, when you see this work of art in person you see the many different layers of paint on top of each other, with the multitudes of different textures. The colors are a thousand times more vivid and real, than what I have seen in books and online. This painting makes you want to reach out your hand and top, just to feel the texture of the painting. The violets, blues, and greens popped out of the painting, and relaxed you. Another painting that really changed in person was one done by Vincent can Gogh, called Stairway at Auvers. This oil on canvas looked a lot different during my research but also even in the museum pamphlet they gave out to me. The swirling lines of the foreground road move backward to the center of the composition, joined the base of the stairway on which an elderly man with a stick descends. This showed the image of a real countryside and beautiful to the eye. The painting in person showed a lot more contrast and brightness of colors. These colors included that of greens, blues, reds and yellows. The pictures make the colors seem dull and lifeless, not what countryside really portrays. It is interesting to see different artwork in books and Internet, and them
