There were so many things happening in Salem that people were going crazy and blaming certain actions on witchcraft. The people of Salem believed the satan had taken over Salem and he was the one bewitching people. The ones who were accused were questioned and if they didn’t confess they would hang. If they confessed they would just be put in jail for a few weeks. The ones who were accusing people of witchcraft were the ones who had dark forces in them and wanted certain things.
As more and more people became accused and were put on trial. The people of Salem became desperate and called in Reverand Hale and Judges from the highest court. The jails were soon full and people were already being hanged if they didn’t confess. Those who were accused

By hanging those accused Thomas putnam could buy up all their land. When John, Giles, and Francis entered the court they wanted the court to release their wives. When John and Mary went into the court, Parris was going insane wanting John to leave or be imprisoned. Reverend Parris wanted John hanged because he thinks John is the Devil's man. John is then condemned of being a man of the devil and is sentenced to hang the next day.
Later on John and Elizabeth were called out of the jail and were to either confess to the crime of witchcraft or be hanged. John And Elizabeth were then talking about what to do. Then they decided that John should confess for the both of them. After he confessed he was then asked to sign the confession paper. He then took the paper and started rambling about the paper blackening his name. Judge Danforth asked for John to give him the paper, but he refused to give Danforth the paper.
When John didn’t give the paper to Danforth, Cheever and Herrick took John and put him back in the jail. Elizabeth was able to go home. The next day was when John Proctor was sentenced to hang for dealing with the devil. Elizabeth and her kids were to keep their farm and were to keep growing the crops and hauling wood for the winter
