First, I’d like to discuss the first theory, it discussed the possibility that witchcraft wasn't at fault for the salem witch trials, but instead just an Ergot fungus. Theory One explained the Ergot fungus was a hallucinogen like the drug LSD, that the reason the two Protestant girls accused all those people for witchcraft, possibly wasn't entirely made up, but was just their own mind playing tricks on them after being exposed to the Ergot fungus found in the rye grain. This fungus thrives in the hot, moist summer, evidence led that Salem was under these conditions, and most, if not all accusers lived in the western part of Salem where there was swampy murky conditions where the fungus would have been present. There is also evidence pointing that the following summer was dry, where this fungus could not survive, which possibly points to the sudden stop in accusations or “bewitchments”. The accusers were residents of salem village. Salem village was the equivalent to the poor side of town, filled with farmers, but in Salem Town they were dominated by rich merchants. There is a possibility that the accusers were driven by jealousy of the more wealthy class and accused them of witchcraft simply because they disliked them. These horrible crimes and unjust executions might have been the results of simple young girls pointing fingers at the richer Salem residents only because they were jealous.
