Salma Hayek Jiménez de Pinault is an actress, director, and producer of Mexican and Lebanese descent. She was born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico on September second, nineteen sixty-six to a Spanish mother and Lebanese father. Hayek was raised in a Catholic home and attended a convent school in New Orleans, Louisiana until the age of twelve, when she then later moved to Houston, Texas to live with her aunt during her teens. She attended a university in Mexico City for a short period of time, until she decided to leave college to pursue a career in acting, eventually becoming one of the most renowned actresses around the world. Hayek has been nominated for numerous awards regarding her employment as an actress, director, and producer. She is an Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee for her role as executive producer of the hit television series Ugly Betty. In addition, was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best actress, for the film Frida, where she was the first Latina actress to be nominated in that category. She is a strong and determined woman and has a mindset that resembles my mother’s. My sister was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age; however my mom never felt the need to tell her. When we later found out during my sister’s senior year of high school my mother’s immediate response was “why does it matter?”. She believes that just because you have a disability does not mean that you are disabled. You can become whoever you want regardless of what may be ‘wrong’ with you as long as you put forth the effort in achieving your goals. Salma Hayek acts as inspiration to many people, whether they are disabled, an immigrant, or a woman. She shows that no matter where you come from or where you may be at a life, your future is something you decide and shape depending on how hard you work in achieving
