This book is about a boy called Salva Dut. Salva lived in Sudan, Africa. One day, when Salva was in school, he heard gunshots. He had to hide under the table until the gun shots were gone. Then, he and his classmates all had to run for their lives. They walked through a forest for a few days and they felt scared because they didn’t know where they were going and Salva kept on wondering about his family, and if he would ever see them again.

When they were walking to a Refugee Camp in the east of Sudan, they went by some people with guns. They ordered for everybody to separate into groups of women and children, and men in the other. Salva saw kids that were one year older then him go into the men's group, so, he thought that he was in the men's group. When he started to walk towards the men's group, one of the men with the guns started to walk towards Salva and said, “Hey Kid, you are too small to be fighting in war, you have to go with the other woman and children that are over there!”

When they were walking, they found the Nile river, - But since the river was flowing to fast, they had to make a boat, so they worked all day and night to make a boat. Then, they eventually made a boat. When they crossed the Nile river, they found a small Island in the middle of the river. The people who lived on that Island gave Salva some Sugar Cane and Fish.
