Would you be able to survive years in the harsh wild? With a lack of essential necessities, such as water and food, but an abundant amount of neglection and despair? Salva Mawien Dut Ariik, an 11 year old boy at the time, was one of the many thousands of boys that survived the second Sudanese Civil war, which took place in the 1980s. Salva travels to many refugee camps and eventually gets picked to start a new life in the United States of America. After Salva arrived in the United States, he received an education and decides to help his home country, South Sudan, buy building wells for the residents that abide there. Salva’s unique and amazing story is portrayed in A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. Along Salva’s journey, he experiences many joyful moments, but there were very difficult tasks that he had to take down. Salva is able to overcome these challenges with the help of many survival factors. His family, with him or not, courage to allow Salva to do daring tasks, and the determination to survive and bring happiness upon other people allowed him to trek through these hardships. The determination to keep on going, the courage to attempt things unreasonable, and family, helped Salva defeat these challenges. These factors taught Salva many things. He learned that fear and depression is the key to thriving, and that the world can be looked at from many different perspectives. Salva will teach future generations that they should give more than they should take. The future generation of South Sudan will also never have people exactly like Salva, because horrible times have passed on. Salva will inspire many more people from all different backgrounds because he is such an interesting man that rose from such bad conditions. These survival factors will be remembered as keys to
