An army veteran and a retired Navy pilot that is in the Medina County Veterans Service named Bob Fiest once said, “Vietnam vets were a bit crushed coming home. We were not honored, but were treated as the face of an unpopular war”. The amount of respect the Vietnam veterans experienced when they were coming home were very little to none due to the fact many people saw little heroic actions. This caused many controversy and resulted in many harsh treatment towards the veterans such as Sam Hermanstorfer. Hermanstorfer, a Vietnam veteran, joined the army due to his family members past experiences of being veterinarians. Hermanstorfer was able to get 1A classification which meant he was eligible for service and did maintenance on all vehicles which shows that his war story is very different than other veterans even though they were all treated the same after the war. “It started out we lived in tents, in great big tents, with no mosquito netting, or anything, around the tent; the only mosquito netting we had was on your bed”.
