Same Sun Here, written by Silas House and Neela Vaswani, is about two young adolescents writing to each other from miles away and developing a friendship throughout the novel. The two main characters are Meena and River. Meena is a young girl who is from India, but it now living in New York City. Meena’s family are hoping to pass their citizenship exam to be Americans, but for now they are living in an apartment illegally and are always careful to not get caught by the landlord. She spends a lot of time with her neighbor, Mrs. Lau who lets them stay in her son’s apartment and covers for them. Meena’s dad is hardly ever around as he works in New Jersey. Meena is very close to her grandmother she calls “Dadi” even though Dadi still lives in India. Meena had to stay with Dadi in India while her parents were in America because they could not afford to bring her with them until years later …show more content…
This novel is told by both a boy’s point of view and a girls so that either gender can relate. This novel shows young adolescents the possibilities of creating friendships and that no matter how different you are, you can still find someone out there who can relate to you. Same Sun Here educates young adolescents on the difference between two cultures and what immigrants have to go through each day while trying to become citizens of America. For English Language Arts, students would be able to compare and contrast the two main characters in the novel. This would be a great book for students to read and discuss as a whole class. The students could choose which character they could relate to the most and why. Also, for social studies, students could compare and contrast the different cultures and research more on India. This novel has a lot of information on the different beliefs and strategies the two characters has and it would be easy for a students to learn by reading Same Sun
