My career choice in Nursing arises from working in a medical office as a receptionist and desiring to be more hands on with the patients. I was unable to attend school at that time, but the Urology doctor gave me an amazing opportunity to work for him personally as his medical assistant. After the first year working as his assistant I finally found my passion. I became so astounded with a desire to care for those in need. I feel most rewarded while helping and caring for others, which leads to my personal nursing attitude that is based on compassion and service. Entering the profession of nursing, I hope to explore my personal values and principles, which will benefit my nursing practice. As a nurse it is important to understand the management of disease and the medications involved. However, knowledge is not enough, empathetic care is vital as well. The art of nursing is just as significant because applying knowledge by doing something is imperative. The two go hand and hand. While we may have the passion for patient care within ourselves, applying the knowledge that we learn is what leads to a healthy nurse/patient relationship. Nurses are fundamentally the backbone of patient care, by being the liaison between the doctor and the patient. They get answers to problems, give supportive information, give medications, take vitals and keep the doctor aware of any changes in the patient's status that may require attention.
As a nurse, a responsibility to the health and safety of others goes further than the hospital or clinic. Nurses should have an obligation to promote health in their communities and nationwide. Addressing the healthcare needs of my personal community and environment as well as society could help promote good health across the nation. I hope to become very active in healthcare issues among the country, including issues such as cancer awareness, smoking cessation and primary prevention of health care by attending seminars locally and possibly even in other
