The San Antonio National Cemetery holds the distinction of being the oldest national cemetery in the state of Texas. According to the National Park Service, the cemetery was established in the year 1867 when portions of the East Side Cemetery were being sold off. The portion that would become the San Antonio National Cemetery was donated to the federal government. The cemetery is reserved for the internment of veterans and the family members of veterans.
The San Antonio National Cemetery is located at 517 Paso Hondo Street, San Antonio in Bexar county. There is direct access to the cemetery via public road. Entrance is gained through the main gate on the southern side of the cemetery. To the left of the gate there is a plaque that clearly states the name of the cemetery.
The cemetery is in the shape of a rectangle and according to the National Cemetery Administration it is roughly 1.89 acres. Along all four sides there is a four-foot tall stone wall. Surrounding the cemetery on all sides are public roads, beyond which are smaller cemeteries that were created from sold off portions of the East Side Cemetery.

Two paved circular pathways on the east and west sides of the cemetery. The eastern circle is connected to the main entrance on the south side of the cemetery.
