Sandra Cisneros is the author of the Straw Into Gold; Metamorphosis of the Everyday. Cisneros has a personal writing style. The way she words her sentences illustrates that she is talking about a situation that has actually occurred to her. “I had the same sick feeling when I was required to write my MFA exam…” Cisneros then speaks on issues she experienced growing up as well as what she experiences as an adult. Olaudah is the author of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Equiano creates a journalistic writing style expressing events that not only happen to him but events that happen to others. He expresses different thoughts from different perspectives. The two authors used a narrative mode. Cisneros says, “I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be than a writer.” Equiano states that “on deck; and from my extreme youth I was not put in leathers.” While using the words “I”, “me”, “my”, “us”, and we illustrate that the author uses a consistent amount of the first person throughout the text. First person point of view is someone telling you his or her story.The stories told by the two authors are personal experiences that have taken place in their life. Cisneros didn't necessarily provide us with as much description as Equiano did but she did include pieces of descriptive context throughout the text. “I'm the skinny girl in the picture with skinny arms and a crumpled shirt and crooked hair,” gives us an ideal image of how Cisneros looked when she was younger which allows us to picture her. Equiano’s text was very descriptive where he states,“Many a time we were near suffocation from the want of fresh air, which we were often without for whole days together.” Equiano not only gives us a strong description of what occurred on the boat, but the description is so strong it allows us to imagine and be able to see what actually occurs on the boat.Giving us a clear understanding of this brutal voyage Equiano is able to provide evidence for each event taken place on the boat. Which is called exigence, exigence is an issue, problem, or situation that causes or prompts someone to write or speak. Sandra included many events that occurred throughout her life which she spoke about in the text. Cisneros includes in the text, “I was aware of having begun already my own quiet war. I like to think that somehow my family, my Mexicanness, my poverty all had something to do with shaping me into a writer.” Cisneros spoke about the different things she went through as a child and as an adult. While Equiano exigence was inspired by his time on the boat. The brutality experienced on the boat was the problem which leads to the writing of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano.Equiano included that, “This wretched situation was again aggravated by the galling of the chains, now become insupportable, and the fifth of the necessary tubs, into which the children often fell, and were almost suffocated.” Both authors exigence included a conflict which sparked their desire to write the text.
