Sandwich Blitz shops are located on very small parcels of land. This strategy was meant to give Dalman and Lei a competitive advantage by lowering operating expense. Based on new health codes and new laws requiring the trash dumpsters be minimum distance of 30 feet from the rear of the building and all out buildings be at least 6 feet from the property lines. Since enclosure at Sandwich Blitz that houses the trash dumpster is 5 feet away from the property line, it is in violation of the law. However, the government inspector would be willing to approve this if Sandwich Blitz provided the food for his upcoming department holiday party.
One of the steps from Stratford Sherman article “Eight Steps Toward Integrity” is doing the right thing step. The first thing Dalman should do is “acknowledge his personal integrity” (Sherman 44), in order to do the right thing. Dalman needs to take the responsibility and do whatever needs to be done to be in compliance with law, he needs to correct the enclosure that houses the dumpsters. By Dalman rejecting the inspectors offer he is following the “respecting other” step, he is respecting his business partner, his employees and even the inspector by doing the right thing. The inspector will respect Dalman knowing that he is a man of integrity.
Dalman will need to do the checking the mirror step, he needs to give himself a second look to decide if he wants to accept the inspectors bribe. Will Dalman be able to face himself knowing what he did was illegal by accepting the bribe? He will be laden with guilt just knowing that he violated the law and he put the integrity of the company at risk. Dalman would then have to worry about the repercussions of what he brought on himself and on the company that he and Lei
