Santiago demonstrates multiple Code hero characteristic such as accepting death as a part of life. The Marlin is bleeding a lot after the last shark attack. Two more sharks appear,“ the old man hit him squarely in the center of his flat topped head as his nose came out the water”. (Hemingway 109). We can interpret that Santiago has no fear and is very determined. This proves how Santiago accepts death as a natural part of life because he put his life on the line fighting the sharks with his bare hands to have food for himself. Another example is when Santiago continues to follow the bird in search for fish. He catches a marlin but the marlin drags him deeper into the ocean making him lose sight of land. But santiago says "Fish... I'll stay …show more content…
The final example is after the first shark attack, it bit off forty pounds off the marlin. He starts to regret capturing the marlin now that there is a lot of blood in the water because that brings more sharks. "man is not made for defeat... A man can be destroyed but not defeated"(Hemingway 103). We can infer that Santiago is not weak minded and not willing to give up. This proves how Santiago accepts death because he taking the risk to keep the marlin knowing more sharks are going to show up. This quote shows that he accepts that all men can die but not defeated. Santiago shows multiple examples of accepting death by keeping the injured marlin, going deep out into the ocean to catch the marlin, and Santiago attacking two sharks with his bare hands.

Santiago sees a bird and follows the bird knowing it would lead him to fish. “ He rowed slowly and steadily toward where the bird was circling. He did not hurry and he kept his lines straight up and down”(Hemingway 33). We can infer that he has a lot of experience using that way to find fish This proves how Santiago possesses skill because he knows that if he follows a bird, he can find fish. Another example of Santiago showing skill is when Santiago has just captured the marlin and needs to take him back to land but it is to big to be in his skiff. So Santiago, “ He started to pull the fish in to have him alongside so that he could pass a line through his gills and out his mouth and make his head fast alongside the bow” ( Hemingway 95 ). We can interpret that Santiago is very experienced in handling big fish. This proves Santiago is skilled because he ties the marlin’s mouth close so water does not enter so it does not make the marlin heavier than what it already is. The final example of Santiago showing that hye possesses skill is after defeating the first shark to appear using his only harpoon, Santiago has to create a weapon to defend himself from more shark attacks. “ I can lash my knife to the butt of one of the oars”(Hemingway 104). We can infer Santiago is a craftsman and is quick to coming up with ideas. This proves he is skilled because he crafted a weapon out of his surroundings. Santiago
