Characters: Santiago is the protagonist of The Alchemist who later in the novel is referred to as the boy. He is a round character as he grows to want to be more knowledgeable on the search of the treasure, he’s a dynamic character as well because in the beginning Santiago is influenced by riches and people advising him to search for treasure, towards the end of the novel Santiago is influenced by discovering learning alchemy and fulfilling his personal legend. Santiago is willing, strong, and courageous. Santiago is courageous as he leaves everything he knows and familiarizes himself with in order to find the treasure he desires. He is a static character who doesn’t undergo change. He remains a flat character in the novel as he speaks to Santiago he says, “You dream about your sheep and the Pyramids, but you’re different from me, because you want to realize your dreams”(Coelho) he only wishes he had the courage and capacity that Santiago beams through. He doesn’t change and isn’t open to new ideas until Santiago and his ideas begin to benefit his shop. The merchant is someone who didn’t fulfill his personal legend and settled as a crystal merchant. The merchant is stubborn because when Santiago suggests ways to gain clients he is doubtful and gives Santiago a chance with little hope. He is also fearful, unlike Santiago, the Crystal Merchant was scared to leave everything behind ad sacrifice things he was use to in order to fulfil his Personal Legend. He is also caring as he cared and provided for Santiago when he was robbed, even though he had no business and little money he provided Santiago with a job. The Alchemist is 200 years old, he appears to be the least believable person in the novel as he possesses powers through alchemy. He is an important character in the novel as he helps to guide and influence Santiago. The Alchemist is the person who shows how people should follow their dreams and learn to appreciate nature. He is paternal in the sense that he teaches Santiago with great passion. He is also a generous well-intentious man who shares his knowledge with those around him in order to help them discover their personal legend and
