Sarah Koenig takes a look at the case of Adnan Syed and attempts to unravels the mystery of Hae Min Lee’s death, who was a Korean-American girl who attended Woodland High School, in her podcast Serial. Hae Min Lee’s death takes place on the afternoon of January 13, 1999 but her body was found 4 weeks later, partially buried in Leakin park. Adnan Syed, Lee’s ex-boyfriend, was ultimately convicted of her murder without any eyewitnesses or physical evidence to link Syed to the murder. The state relied on Jay Wilds’ testimony given to the police and leading them to focus on Adnan Syed. In Serial, Sarah explains retrials of what happened that day and describes in detail Jay and Adnan’s story of what took place, she also talks to people who knew …show more content…
Cathy testifies, at trial that Adnan was acting suspicious when Jay and Adnan came over to her apartment on January 13th. She claims that, “Adnan was lying on some pillows on her floor when he asked, “how do you get rid of a high?” (2/16/00-210) Adnan got a call on his cell phone and said, “they’re going to come and talk to me, what should I say, what should I do?” (2/16/00-213) Then Adnan and Jay left. (2/16/00-214) Jay returned hours later with Jenn, but Adnan was not with them. (Brief of Appellant at 14.)” (Serial). But Cathy is the only witness who testified that Adnan was acting suspicious on that day. Also, there is a very good reason for Adnan’s behavior, he was incredibly high when he got the call from the police and Jay even reports he was acting unusual not because of the murder but because of a cigarette that Jay gave him prior to arriving at Cathy’s house, causing him to act nauseous. As for the phone call where Cathy reports Adnan saying in a panic matter “What am I gonna do? What am I gonna say? They’re gonna come talk to me. What am I supposed to say?” The podcast discusses how on the other line could very well be Aisha who told adnan that the police “going to get in touch with you too.” making it reasonable for Adnan to respond like that while stoned. All this information when put into context makes Cathy’s story as an important especially of Jay’s story arguing against Adnan’s behavior as …show more content…
The day of Lee’s murder there were 7 outgoing calls on the log, 6 of those calls are to people who Jay knows but the 7th call is to Nisha, who only Adnan knew. Adnan claims that he didn’t have possession of his phone from lunchtime until around 5 but the Nisha call takes place at 3:32. Although this puts Syed into a very suspicious position, the Nisha call has almost as many problems as Jay’s story, let’s start with what Jay can recall about the Nisha call. In the first interview with the police Jay doesn’t mention anything about the call but in the second interview Jay seems to remember the call because he was confronted with the cell records. Although Jay now remembers the Nisha Call, he completely inaccurately describes what happened during the call compared to the actual evidence. He first states that the Nisha call happened after the call to Patrick, but the Patrick call was at 3:39 pm while the Nisha call happened at 3:32 pm. He also recalls that the call was 7 to 10 minutes long and for 3 of those minutes it was him on the phone with Nisha, but the call in reality lasted 2 minutes and 20 seconds. As for what Nisha testifies, she speaks about how “Jay had asked him to come to an adult video store that he worked at.”(Serial) but Jay did not work until 2 weeks after Hae disappeared, she also thinks that Adnan was going to visit Jay rather than Jay and Adnan already being
