Sarny had died. Waller found out about her learning when she had subconsciously and quietly sang the alphabet. A song that Nightjohn had shown her a while back when she finally learned all the letters in the alphabet. By that time Sarny was already 13 years old. She was ecstatic to know how well she memorized the song and was humming it wherever she went. Trying to engrave the song into her brain. But one day she just let it slip and before she knew it, she was thrown onto the ground, a fistful of dirt shoved into her mouth. Like a deer just being born from her mother's womb. Sarny couldn't hear much other than the voices in her head telling her to run and of the terrible Waller would do, from how much blood was oozing out of her ears. She felt herself shaking violently but that wasn't the only thing she felt. There was a rope around her neck. The spiky parts of the rope scratching her. “Let this be a lesson to all of you slaves who think they can take advantage of me and do things behind my back!” Waller yells with his southern accent and Sarny feels the rope being pulled back to make it even more tighter, which makes breathing for her difficult but not impossible. And through her blurred vision from the blood and tears mixing together, Sarny can see Mammy and Nightjohn looking horrified at the scene in front of them. Although she can't see that well because of the swelling in her eyes, making them purple and blue. Through her narrow vision Sarny can see that Nightjohn was about to speak up and that mammy and some other slaves were the one's holding him back from going to rescue Sarny. “Haven't you put the poor girl through enough!?” Mammy screamed through her tears before Nightjohn could say anything.
