“Savage Inequalities” by Jonathan Kozol is an informative read that spotlights the drastic injustices taking place in American schools. Kozol beautifully clarifies the main issues facing students in America today and clearly lays out the unbiased facts of injustice. Reading “Savage Inequalities” furthers my knowledge of racial inequality in America by showcasing the colossal differences between predominantly White schools and mostly Black, Latino, or Hispanic schools. Kozol includes surprising facts throughout the book saying that in one of the poorest districts he visits, “ nearly a quarter of its families [have] less than $5,000 annual income,” or that the wealthiest largely white schools are spending up to $12,000 annually on per pupil funding whereas some of the poorer schools have less than $20 annually to spend (Kozol 137 and 236). I have seen poverty at its finest going down 2nd Street and experienced the differences of a culturally diverse school in the metro to mostly White and Asian school in suburban Minnetonka. Being made aware of the shocking differences in schools 20 mins apart at the age of 8 made me no stranger to the insufficiency of poorer schools and abundant support of wealthier suburban districts. Reading “Savage Inequalities” reconfirms my beliefs and encourages me to go out try to improve America’s schools. Moving forward especially in my school life this book’s information makes me thankful for the ample amount of opportunities and allotted resources I have access to in Minnetonka. I hope to one day use the ideas and information in this book to make a lasting effect on the American Education System and eliminate the racial tension and
