The theme of the story “The Scarlet Ibis” is that the older brother loves his little brother but his pride causes conflict between them. The brother pushes and motivates his younger brother Doodle, his love your for younger brother encourages him to help but his shame of Doodles failings results ends up killing Doodle. He is ashamed that Doodle is disabled and different. He pushes and pushes Doodle but he ends up killing him because he could not handle all of the stress. The brother lets his pride get in the way of loving his brother, therefore his brother dies because of it. The theme of “The Scarlet Ibis” is love and pride war in a Brothers motivation to help Doodle; his love encourages kindness, but his shame at Doodle’s failings results in the cruelty that kills the younger boy. The brother taught his brother how to walk because he was embarrassed of his brother, he loves his brother but his pride gets in the way of that. Doodle learns to walk so him and his brother decide that he will learn how to swim and run so that he would be normal. The theme of “The Sniper” is that the war reduces human beings to mere objects. The soldiers see the people they are shooting as targets. The themes of these two stories are similar because both the sniper in the story and the brother get reduced to less than human, which results in both of them accidentally killing their brothers. The sniper in the story was trained to see the enemy as targets not humans. This results in him fighting against his brother and shooting him before he realizes that he was his brother. The brother in the other story lets his pride get in the way of his love for his brother and he pushes him too hard and it ends up killing him.
