With assimilation, the baby is adding information to their existing schema; the baby understands that kicking produces movement in the bouncer. With accommodation, the baby’s schema of not being able to move the bouncer is replaced with the understanding of her feet and legs on when and how much force must be put in, in order to get the bouncer moving.
One of the reflexes highlighted in the film was stepping which involves a person supporting an infant’s weight so their feet touch the ground and later leads to them making a walking motion. The psychologist goes on to explain that the monkey will have no sympathy for the boy’s disappointment, puts the monkey in a separate room, asks the child what sticker he doesn’t want, and finally brings the monkey back to choose a sticker. The 3 year old boy pointed to the sticker he wanted and in response the monkey took it thus leaving the 3 year old with the sticker he disliked. Next, a boy 18 months older than the 3 year old is tested with the same experiment. However, the older boy knew how to fool the monkey, instead of pointing to the sticker he actually wanted he pointed to the sticker he didn’t want. The critical understanding that children need to grasp in order to win the game is knowing that their thoughts are theirs alone as well as the fact that they can think of things that others can’t. Furthermore, they need to understand the concept that their thoughts are separate from the thoughts of others. This understanding is important for this game because without it children are unable to trick the monkey like the older boy did, he understood that the monkey didn’t know his plan because his thoughts are different from the thoughts of the
