Introduction
Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) is presenting an issue from a personal perspective. Unlike traditional scholarly writing, SPN tells the personal story. SPN merging together the individual story and research. It provides the reader with deeper understanding on the specific issue and perhaps develop insights towards future research.
In this capstone, I am going to use the SPN perspective for sharing my personal journey as a mother to a child diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Briefly, there are three main sign of ASD at early childhood: The first sign is reduced sociability, empathy, and not able understand social cues. This may become more obvious after a normal development period during infancy, and resulting poor or unsuitable social interactions. The second sign of ASD is inflexibility and persistency, that could include unreasonable repetitive movements and or actions; the urge for monotonically routine, and difficulty to cope with changes. Although this negative vision on parenthood to children with disability, some research indicate that big number of families of disabled children eventually develop a successful coping skills providing the needs of their children as well as functioning successfully as a family unit (O'Brien, 2007).
In this capstone I wish to explore the challenges parents to children with autism struggle with, as well as coping with the struggles and their child diagnosis. I will explore this issue through sharing my own personal narrative, as a mother to a child who is diagnosed with autism. I will use the SPN format in order to connect my personal narrative and experience to existing studies that research parental struggles and coping with their children diagnosis and
