School Board Meeting Interview

This interview took place after a school board meeting on Thursday, October 17, 2013 in the Florence school district one board room at the central office. This interview was with Ms. Pat Caulder who was in her first term as a school board member. During the interview, Ms. Caulder and I discussed the positive and negatives of state assessments, and the districts role in administering and preparing for those assessments.

From this assignment, it exposed me to the decisions that elected educational leaders must encounter as they do their jobs. Moreover, I learned that because many of the people who are school board members do not have the educational background as teachers or administrators; they sometimes lack the trivial informational data need to make certain decisions. This means at an individual school level we have to do a better job at showing members that we are competent and able to run an efficient school without their interference. I would have done better on this assignment, if I would have been able to ask more questions about her opinions on the running of the school system rather than simply on the importance of testing and its role in our school system. Likewise, in the future I will prepare my own more personal questions to ask elected officials, and use it to inquire more about their own personal educational philosophies. The only “surprise” that occurred during the assignment is the fact that she was so open to criticizing the use of certain testing, and she understood its impact on student
