Putting An End To School Shootings It has become an age where questions have arisen regarding the safety of pupils and teachers in the classroom. Mass school shootings have been happening all over America and it is becoming an everyday problem. There have been many ways people have tried to prevent this tragedy from happening. Such as enhancing security and anti-bullying programs, but those solutions so far have not succeeded. This is no longer considered rare, but rather an epidemic. Since 2013, there have been at least 156 school shootings in America, an average of nearly one a week (EverytownResearch). The situation has to be solved. Schools show out of date videos that do not focus what the real problem is when it comes to bullying. A 12-year-old in Nevada who shot his math teacher and two students was allegedly inspired by an anti-bullying video that suggested carrying a weapon could intimidate bullies (Culp-Ressler). The teachers do not take the anti-bullying programs seriously and if they do not take it seriously nor will the students. A study published last month in the Journal of Criminology suggested that anti-bullying programs could be having the opposite than intended effects. In an analysis of 7,000 students from 50 states, researchers from the University of Texas at Arlington found that students at schools with anti-bullying initiatives may be more likely to become a victim of bullying (Trowbridge). They do not impact useful tools for responding to bullying but simply teach children or adolescents how to identify and express their feelings. Several rigorous studies have failed to prove that such programs actually reduce bullying (Labash 13). For example, Bergen University’s Dan Olweus, claims that after his anti-bullying program was implemented, instances of bullying declined fifty percent or more over a two-year period. More often than not, anti-bullying programs are outdated and do not appeal to students from this generation. What needs to happen is schools need to have students in their own schools make anti-bullying campaigns. Schools need to find some of the most influential students in the school and they need to have them create anti-bullying campaigns. It will appeal to all of the students. It is one of the best ways to let bullies realize that bullying is outdated and is actually hurting people. If bullies knew that all of the school did not agree with what they are doing, then bullies would cease to exist. It is one of the best ways to fix bullying. The world is becoming modernized and people are realizing that bullying has become antiquated and its practice is outdated. People see bullies on old movies and television programs, but none of them actually are like bullies in the modern world. It is time for school to actually build new anti-bullying campaigns that break the stereotype of bullies. Bullying is something that can be solved, schools just need to join together with influential students every two years to make new campaigns that actually appeal to students from this
