Take a look at a highschool classroom. The teacher is most likely in front of the class while the students are taking their notes. But, take a closer look. In the back, numerous students are dozing off to their wonderful land of magical mysteries and discoveries, leaving a puddle of drool on their desk. Today, a huge amount of high school students are sleep deprived. The students have to wake up early, spend hours listening to their teachers, and come home with huge amount of homework that will probably take them hours to finish. How can we solve this problem that is influencing the fate of our nation? Studies have shown that having school start later will excel in academics, and it will improve the student's physical health. With school starting later includes better academic performance, fewer absences and an increase in graduation rate. According to an article called School Starting Later Helps Students, Dr. Carskadon, a renowned expert on sleep in adolescents expresses that, “After a multitude of studies, it has become blatantly obvious that students who can follow their circadian rhythm for a good night’s sleep are less likely to be tardy to school or absent because they are willing to get up at that …show more content…
A 2001 study showed that extracurricular activities are a major reason why high school would rather start earlier in the day. Sports needs to practice outdoor with daylight . Students walking home after these activities can take advantage of the final extra daylight for their personal safety. According to an article written by Rachel Pancare, “ When school ends later, many students do not have an opportunity to work, which can deprive their families of the extra income they need”. In some cases, students may need to travel, an early release is necessary for their job whether it’s voluntarily or not. It also means more time in the evening for homework and family for
