Most hearing people think that a hearing aid or cochlear implant solves all problems of a deaf person but it does not. In the article “Science Gave My Son the Gift of Sound” by Lydia Denworth. Denworth main idea is that she thinks that the cochlear implant works for some deaf or hard of hearing people. Denworth also gives her personal account of being a parent of deaf child.

The issue of this article is the matter of whether to give cochlear implant or to have the child grow up deaf or hard of hearing. The two views of the cochlear implants are this; the hearing people want their deaf child or hard of hearing to have a sense of hearing. And the Deaf culture is divided on the matter as well. Some think that the child should be old enough to make the choice themselves and not the parent or another person, Denworth states that one of the Deaf view is “many believed deaf children should have the opportunity to make the choice for themselves once they were old enough” (Denworth). She wants to give a positive outlook of having cochlear implant for her son Alex who seems happy being a hearing child. Denworth describes when she gets the results of her son’s auditory test, “Now, after 12 months of using the cochlear implant, the change was almost unbelievable. His expressive language had risen to the 63rd percentile and his receptive language to the 88th percentile. He was above age level on some measures. And that was compared to hearing children.” (Denworth). She was ecstatic that her son is now doing better than a hearing child. She wants to convey her relief in the matter. Also, when she states “‘You did it,’ I said”. (Denworth). She is constantly relaying that she had a positive experience with a cochlear implant, “I was thrilled with his progress and with the cochlear implant.”
