Anthem is a deluded Utopia, and is unrealistic in its ideals. Through the outlawing of friendships and romantic relationships the leaders impose devastating psychological effects on its citizens. Equality’s yearn for learning brings him happiness. By disallowing him to develop such desires, the leaders of Anthem deprive him of such joy. Anthem’s leaders are classic examples of leaders present in a communistic culture. They exhibit hypocritical natures and implement brainwashing, propaganda, and fear to ensure their authoritative reign. It is when Equality finally breaks free from collectivism and embraces his inner ego that he is able to reach
