Point 1: The forced evictions/clearances reached their peak in the 1840s and early 1850s. At the time, and since, many have seen the clearances as an act of greed in the Highlands on the part of the wealthier class like for example: landowners to hold on to their land, sacrificing their people/tenants in order to preserve their wealth for more opportunities to make a more sizeable profit.
As in Ireland, the potato crop also failed in Scotland, during the mid 19th century and a widespread outbreak of Cholera weakened the Scottish population further. The ongoing clearances resulted in the starvation, deaths, and a second clearance, when families either migrated voluntarily or were forcibly evicted.
